The Story
The CRB Steel Turning Mandrel Wax is a premium parting agent made from hydrocarbon and microcrystalline waxes, designed specifically for custom rod builders. It creates a smooth, non-stick surface on steel mandrels, making it easy to shape and release cork, EVA, and other handle materials without sticking or tearing.
Simply apply a thin coat, buff to a glossy finish, and your mandrel is ready for grip turning. This wax prevents epoxy and glue from permanently bonding to the steel while still keeping materials firmly in place for accurate shaping. Builders can even use fast-set 5-minute epoxy to temporarily secure grip sectionsβthen slide them off cleanly after shaping.
Application Instructions:
- Surface prep: Clean mandrel thoroughly, removing any silicone-based parting agents.
- Apply: Spread a thin, even coat with a clean rag. Wipe away excess.
- Buff: After ~1 minute, buff with terry cloth or lambβs wool pad on a lathe or power wrapper. Avoid friction burns.
- Repeat: For new mandrels, apply and buff 3β4 coats, alternating rubbing directions.
- Cure: Wait 1 hour after the final coat before turning grips.
- Conditioned mandrels: Apply one coat after each use or as needed.
Features & Benefits:
- Reliable release agent β Prevents cork, EVA, and other grip materials from sticking to mandrels.
- Epoxy-safe β Works with 5-minute epoxy for secure, temporary bonding during shaping.
- Professional finish β Buffs to a glossy surface for smooth, efficient turning.
- Durable protection β Multiple coats protect and condition mandrels for long-term use.
- Convenient size β 3.5 oz tin provides many applications.
